I scrambled up the tree just in time. The growling dragon stood on the ground, glaring at me. It was unlikely he’d climb the tree with his huge chubby legs—he’d never get past the first set of branches.

But how long would I have to wait? I knew how angry Daryl was; of all the dragons, he was the most sensitive. I didn’t mean to hurt his feelings, but the words had just slipped out.

Being a dragon trainer wasn’t easy; I had to be careful to always do and say the right things because dragons were very sensitive. Everyone knew dragons were the best artists and musicians—they used their sensitivity to create beautiful things, and yet they often got their feelings hurt by unkind humans.

As I climbed a little higher up the tree I tried to talk to Daryl. He really wasn’t a mean dragon; he was just a bit angry.

“Daryl, my friend,” I said. “I am sorry that I spoke unkindly.” I reached out my hand to him even though it was too far away to reach.

Daryl grunted and shook his green head; then he sat down on the ground with his plump legs crossed at the ankles.

“I was wrong and I want to make it right,” I pleaded.

Looking up at me, Daryl’s eyes softened. “You were? You do?” he mumbled.

“Absolutely,” I said. “You are my friend and I would never mean to hurt you.”

“All right,” Daryl murmured and stood up with his arms outstretched.

I knew Daryl meant it, and so I slowly climbed down the tree to give my friend a hug.
