The Northwest Ordinance, enacted in 1787, outlawed slavery in the Northwest Territory. It prohibited the practice of slavery and established a system for the admission of new states into the Union. The ordinance stated that "there shall be neither slavery nor involuntary servitude" in the territory. This was a significant step towards the eventual abolition of slavery in the United States.
