The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) resulted in the Crusaders veering off course from their original mission to conquer Muslim-controlled Jerusalem. Instead, they became involved in a conflict which led to the sacking of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, in 1204. This event did not lead to the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, the occupation of Jerusalem by European Crusaders, or the reunification of the Catholic Church.
