Which of the following best describes a direct result of the Fourth Crusade? A) The establishment of the Ottoman Empire B) The occupation of Jerusalem by European Crusaders C) The reunification of the Catholic Church D) The sacking of Constantinople by European Crusaders

D) The sacking of Constantinople by European Crusaders

The Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) resulted in the Crusaders veering off course from their original mission to conquer Muslim-controlled Jerusalem. Instead, they became involved in a conflict which led to the sacking of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, in 1204. This event did not lead to the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, the occupation of Jerusalem by European Crusaders, or the reunification of the Catholic Church. In fact, the Fourth Crusade deepened the divide between the Eastern Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Church.
