This event heightened the fear and distrust between the two nations, and brought them to the brink of war. Likewise, the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 symbolized the division between East and West, and was seen as a direct challenge to the United States and its allies. The wall also served as a tangible reminder of the Soviet Union's control over Eastern Europe, further escalating tensions between the two nations.
