Georgia During the Civil War

What did blockade runners do?

During the Civil War, blockade runners were private ships or vessels that attempted to get past the Union naval blockade that was imposed on Confederate ports, including those in Georgia. Their main objective was to transport essential supplies such as weapons, ammunition, medicine, and other goods that were scarce in the Confederate states. Blockade runners would typically sail under cover of darkness, with their crews employing various tactics to evade Union ships, such as using speed, stealth, or running the blockade in bad weather conditions. Once they successfully reached a Confederate port, these blockade runners would unload their cargo and return on another voyage. Despite the risks involved, blockade running was a lucrative but dangerous enterprise during the Civil War.
