The power to resolve the dispute between New Hampshire and New York regarding Vermont ultimately rested with the courts. However, both New Hampshire and New York had conflicting territorial claims over Vermont, and the dispute was further complicated by the fact that Vermont itself sought independence. The issue was eventually resolved in 1791 when Vermont was admitted as the 14th state of the United States.
