What things around us are made of glass—windows, lighting fixtures, drinking vessels, and more? All of the glass used to make these things was once sand on a beach.

Glass was first discovered more than 4,000 years ago, and for many years it was used to make things like beads and jewelry. During its origins, glass was carved or shaped around a mold. Then, around 50 BCE, glassblowing was discovered, and people started to make many more items out of glass, including drinking vessels and perfume bottles. For many years, glassblowing was a top-secret craft. In most cases, only families in the upper reaches of society owned glass.
This exclusive ownership changed in the 1600s with the invention of the printing press. Printers published a book that told readers how to make and blow glass. With the secret available to the general public, glass became a more common item in households. Although new technologies have been introduced since then, the basic process of glassblowing is still the same.
