Seventeen-year-old Samantha Garvey's research led to scholarships, television appearances, and even a meeting with President Obama. It all started, however, with something a lot more ordinary: the clams living in a salt marsh on Long Island, New York. The marsh had been recently invaded by the Asian shore crab. This is a species not native to the marsh. Samantha decided to research the effects that the predatory species had on the native clam population. She found that clams produced thicker shells when living near the crabs. These shells gave them additional protection against their predators.
