The first Mesoamerican civilization began

around 1200 BC in the region of modern-day Mexico. This civilization is known as the Olmec civilization and is considered one of the earliest complex societies in Mesoamerica. The Olmec people established several city-states along the Gulf of Mexico and were known for their impressive art, architecture, and monumental stone sculptures. They also developed a sophisticated agricultural system, with extensive trade networks and a social hierarchy. The Olmec civilization laid the foundation for future Mesoamerican civilizations, such as the Maya and the Aztecs.
