As much as 50 percent of some types of algae is oil. That oil can be changed into fuel. In some ways, algae crops are favored over other alternative fuels. Algae grow much faster and take up less space than other crops. An acre of corn can make about 20 gallons (76 liters) of oil each year. However, an acre of algae can make up to 15,000 gallons (56,780 liters) of oil. Algae can also eat waste from wastewater cleaning plants and power plants. Still, there is one large problem with algae oil. It is expensive. Currently, it costs about $20 to make one gallon (3.8 liters) of algae fuel.
