The air component of soil has the last volume, as it occupies the spaces between the solid particles and the water content.
The component of soil that occupies the largest volume is the mineral portion. This includes rock fragments, sand, silt, and clay particles. These mineral components make up approximately 45-50% of the total volume of most soils. The remaining volume is occupied by other components such as water, air, organic matter (humus), and living organisms.
