Jerome was leaving his house when he heard a loud scream coming from inside. He ran back to the backdoor and entered as quietly as a mouse. He could hear his heart thumping inside his body. “Who could have screamed?” he thought.
The house was empty when he left. Was there an intruder? Jerome moved upstairs. Someone screamed again. He stopped in his tracks and held the bannister. His face was as white as a sheet. He was sure that the sound had come from the guest room.
Jerome remembered that only Paulie, the African grey parrot, was in that room. He rushed up to it, hoping that Paulie was not in danger. As he entered, Paulie greeted him with a whistle. Jerome looked around; there was no one else in that room. Then he heard the scream again.
It was Paulie.
Jerome heaved a sigh of relief. “It must be all those scary movies that Paulie watches with mom,” thought Jerome. “He’s just copying the actors’ screams.”
