The Hewett Treaty of 1902 was a treaty between Ethiopia and Italy that was signed in October 1902. It granted Italy control over the port of Assab and the surrounding area, as well as the right to build a railway from the port to the highlands of Ethiopia. This treaty proved to be disastrous for Ethiopia, as it allowed Italy to gain a foothold in the region and eventually led to the Italian occupation of Ethiopia in 1936.
