John Thornton is the main human character in Jack London's novel The Call of the Wild. He is a wealthy prospector who rescues the main character, a dog named Buck, from a cruel owner. Thornton teaches Buck to be a sled dog and the two become close friends. Thornton eventually dies in an attempt to save Buck from a pack of wolves.
