Shield volcanoes have weak eruptions because they are formed by the eruption of low-viscosity lava that flows easily. This type of lava is not very explosive and therefore does not produce powerful eruptions. Shield volcanoes are also usually composed of basaltic lava, which is relatively low in silica content and therefore does not produce explosive eruptions.
