Looking for the Far East (for example China). There was already trade between Europe and the Far East but it was eastward around Africa or over land (the silk road for example) and was controlled by a few trading monopolies. Others figured if they could sail from Europe westward to China they would short circuit that system. Unfortunately the Americas and the Pacific got in the way.
