What is a hipster?

This is probably a dumb question but I hear a lot of people say that can't stand hipsters. What is a hipster?

Hipsters tend to have beards and tattoos and wear shoes with no socks in gentrified neighborhoods in LA and NY, have wealthy parents or old money, and act like they are poor with refined cultural tastes.

Generally stylish, urban young people with shifting unconventional attitudes and tastes according to what is 'cool' or 'hip.'

Not a dumb question at all! A hipster is a term used to describe a specific subculture of people, often associated with values such as non-conformity, independent thinking, and appreciation for alternative and indie music, fashion, art, and lifestyle choices.

To understand what a hipster is, here's how you can find out more:

1. Research: Look up articles, books, and online sources that discuss the history and characteristics of hipsters. This will provide you with a broader understanding of the term and its origins.

2. Observations: Observe the behavior, fashion choices, and interests of people you suspect might be hipsters. Notice any common traits or identifying markers.

3. Cultural references: Watch movies, TV shows, and documentaries that feature hipster culture, such as "Portlandia" or "Hipster Handbook". These can provide humorous insights and examples of hipster stereotypes.

4. Engage in conversation: Talk to people who are familiar with or identify themselves as hipsters. Ask them about their interests, values, and lifestyle choices to gain a firsthand perspective.

It's important to remember that the term "hipster" is often used with varying contexts and may carry negative connotations for some people. Keep an open mind and approach the topic with curiosity and respect for different perspectives.
