In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, name three characters who have sacrificed themselves for the sake of others.

(I've thought of Atticus Finch and Boo Radley, but have difficulty of thinking of the third person.)

What about Calpurnia?

Does she sacrifice herself by taking care of Scout and Jem?

She has a child of her own, doesn't she? Of course, she is a paid employee. What do YOU think?

Well, she does spend most of her time at the Finch house caring for Scout and Jem. It's also mentioned a couple of times in the novel that Calpurnia stayed late at the Finch house watching the children since Atticus wasn't home. Maybe she's sacrificing her time with her child and at home to make sure Scout and Jem are safe when Atticus isn't home?

I don't know who your teacher has in mind. I can't think of any other character who goes beyond what is expected of him/her, unless it is Scout herself sometimes. Remember, she invites the poor boy to have a meal with her family and doesn't think she should be a snob about it.

I think I'll go with Calpurnia, since I'll be using this for an essay and will probably have more evidence for her than Scout. Thanks for your help!

To find the answer to your question, let's review the key characters in Harper Lee's novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird," and identify three characters who have sacrificed themselves for the sake of others.

1. Atticus Finch: Atticus Finch is the father of the novel's protagonist, Scout. He is a lawyer known for his integrity and moral courage. Atticus sacrifices his reputation within the community by defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of . Despite knowing the racial prejudice that prevails, Atticus believes in justice and faces the backlash of an intolerant society to protect an innocent man.

2. Boo Radley (Arthur Radley): Boo Radley is a mysterious and reclusive character who becomes a symbol of kindness and compassion. While his sacrifices are less explicit than others, Boo sacrifices his own freedom and isolation to protect Scout and Jem from the malicious intentions of Bob Ewell. He risks his own safety by ultimately saving the children from harm when they are attacked.

3. Tom Robinson: Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, sacrifices his own freedom and safety by maintaining his innocence throughout the trial. Despite overwhelming evidence in his favor, Tom is convicted due to the racial prejudices of the jury and society. Despite knowing the consequences, Tom maintains the truth and pays the ultimate sacrifice when he tries to escape prison and is killed.

By examining the actions and motivations of characters in the novel, we can identify Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson as three characters who sacrifice themselves for the sake of others.
