(y^3-y^2-5y-5)/(y+1)

can someone help me solve this?

If you examine the numerator, you will see that it is

y^3-y^2 -5y-5
or
y^2(y-1) - 5(y+1)

Something tells me there's a typo, and it should have read

y^3+y^2 -5y-5
which is
y^2(y+1) - 5(y+1)
so you have
(y^2-5)(y+1)/(y+1)
= y^2-5
