How would your life be affected if a magnetic-storm shut down electricity in your city?

We have no idea what effects it would have on you.

The question is weak, how big a storm? In a "Kerrington" size event you might not have electricity again for years, if ever. If the power outage lasts long enough for the fuel in the backup generators at the nuclear power plants to run out, they will explode and burn, spreading deadly amounts of radiation for thousands of square miles.

If it is not that big, then you still have no water, no gas, no gasoline, no air conditioning, refrigeration or freezers, no sanitation (sewers use pumps), thousands of people and mabey no food supply. Also your phone, landlines have a 3 day battery backup, cell towers wont work, no radio stations, emergency service workers will not come....

If a magnetic storm were to shut down electricity in your city, your life would be significantly affected in various ways. Here are some potential impacts:

1. Power outage: The most immediate effect would be a complete loss of electricity. This means that all appliances, devices, and systems that rely on electricity would cease to function. This includes lights, heating or cooling systems, refrigeration, internet, and communication devices.

2. Disruption of daily routines: Without electricity, you would face challenges in performing everyday tasks. Cooking, cleaning, and personal hygiene might become more difficult without functioning appliances. Additionally, there would be no way to charge your phone, laptop, or other electronic devices.

3. Limited access to necessities: Many essential services rely on electricity. With a power outage, you might lose access to clean water (as water treatment plants require electricity), public transportation (trains, trams, etc.), and potentially even fuel pumps at gas stations.

4. Communication difficulties: As the internet, phones, and other communication systems rely on electricity, you would likely experience difficulties staying connected with friends, family, and emergency services. This could hinder your ability to receive updates, contact loved ones, or seek assistance in case of emergencies.

To prepare for such an event, it is advisable to:

1. Stock up on essential supplies: Have a supply of non-perishable food, water, batteries, flashlights, and basic medical supplies. This will help you sustain yourself during a power outage.

2. Develop alternative means of communication: Consider having a landline phone, battery-powered radios, or even portable solar chargers to keep important lines of communication open during an electricity disruption.

3. Learn basic survival skills: Familiarize yourself with techniques for cooking without electricity, finding alternative light sources, and staying warm or cool without relying on electric-powered heating or cooling systems.

4. Have a backup power source: Investing in a generator or alternative power source, such as solar panels or a power bank, can help mitigate some of the challenges faced during a power outage. However, ensure proper safety precautions and maintenance to avoid any hazards.

By being prepared and having contingency plans in place, you can minimize the potential negative impacts of a power outage caused by a magnetic storm.
