In my book it says that, The Navajo were using European cloth and dyes to create weavings that matched the quality of work produced on the best looms in Europe.

Does that mean they were trying to imitate the works that were done in Europe?

No, they were using the materials used in Europe, but they made their own designs and creations. Theirs were not inferior to any made in Europe.
