  1. recall that speed is distance travelled per unit time, or
    v = d/t
    since the given speed is in miles per hour, we first convert the given time (the 12 minutes) to hours:
    60 minutes = 1 hour ; thus
    12 minutes = 0.2 hour
    substituting,
    v = d/t
    35 = d/0.2
    d = 7 miles
