I'm finding it difficult to correct these sentences. I hope you can help me check them.Thank you.

1)In 19th-century the greater part of black slaves was born in America though they were originally deported from West Africa.
2)They worked for white people as servants and housekeepers or as slaves on extensive (?) plantations.
3)Working conditions were very hard, because every mistake or struggle for independence was punished through cruel tortures and even the death.
4)Slaves couldn't practice their original religion, and hat to follow a modified form of Christianism (?), which defined them as servants and didn't speak of independence.
5)However, black people were able to conserve (?) their culture thanks to songs which were sung on plantations.
6)Slaves was finally abolished in 1865, when the Northern States, guid by the Republican Party and the president Abraham Licoln won the civil war against Southern States.
7) In 1984 Orwell represented (or represents) a totalitarian society, in which every form of individuality and independence is forbidden and the party has conformed people and their thoughts to its ideologies.
8) The state of Oceania described in the book can be compared to totalitarian states of the 20th century.

Pacifist commented :Only four of them dpecited Liancourt rocks, 大日本沿海略図, �鮮�海岸図,日本本州�州�四国附�鮮, �鮮全岸 - all these four maps were not Korean maps, these are maps of Sea of Japan or its surrounding lands. So I suppose the Meiji government didn't think that Liancourt rocks to be Korean territory at all. Whis is it so?
