Please can you check that I have put colons, semi-colons and hyphens in the right places.

In 1) I need to put a colon and a semi colon in the paragraph.

1)There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide, sweeping ones narrow, rickety ones some that led somewhere different on a Friday; some with a vanishing step halfway up that you had to remember to jump.

In 2) I need to put a colon instead of a full stop. Would I put the colon after the word broken. Also I need to put in semi-colons, I think there should be one after the word dog, one after the word set and one after the word rifle.

2)Nearly everything in here was broken. The month-old cine-camera was lying on top of a small, working tank Dudley had once driven over next door's dog in the corner was Dudley's first-ever television set, which he'd put his foot through when his favourite programme had been cancelled there was a large bird-cage which had once held a parrot that Dudley had swapped at school for a real air-rifle, which was up on a shelf with the end all bent because Dudley had sat on it.

In 3) I need to put in a colon. I think it should go after the word Potter (spread Harry Potter).

3)And then the story started to spread Harry Potter, the famous Harry Potter, their hero of two Qui matches, had lost them all those points, him and a couple of other stupid first-years.

Thanks

In 1, you need one more semicolon. The colon and semicolon you already have in there are correct. After the colon is a series of three items, and the semicolon after "Friday" separates the 2nd and 3rd. Where does the separation between the 1st and 2nd need to be?

Sentence 2 is all messed up -- far too many instances of "which" -- it'd be better to completely rewrite the whole sentence and simplify it.

In 3, the colon goes after "spread" -- but this one also needs to be rewritten because of grammatical errors and confusion in the section after the colon.

Many thanks for your help. I am unable to rewrite the paragraphs as these are the paragraphs we have been given and the task is to add the colons etc. I agree some of the sentences do not make 'good English'.

See GuruBlue's comments.

many thanks to you both.

You're welcome! =)

i need to put semi colons and colons in sentence . This is what i ate for breakfast and apple and a bowl of ceral.

1.wide sweeping ones , narrow rickety ones, some that led somewhere different on a Friday

The colon and semi-colon are fine, but you needed to insert commas in the correct places.

2. Place a colon after broken instead of the period. Then you are going to have to put semi-colons after each complete thought in the list.

3. Colon after spread.
