What was the Red Terror? What was its purpose?

The Red Terror was a period of mass political repression and violence carried out by the Bolshevik government in Russia during the Russian Civil War in 1918-1922. Its purpose was to suppress counter-revolutionary movements and opposition to the Bolsheviks, as well as to intimidate and eliminate political opponents.

During the Red Terror, tens of thousands of people were executed, imprisoned, or exiled without trial, often based on their social class, political beliefs, or ethnic background. The violence and brutality of the Red Terror led to widespread fear and mistrust among the population, and contributed to the consolidation of Bolshevik power in Russia.
