Gas exchange primarily occurs in the alveoli, which are tiny air sacs located at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs. Oxygen from the air we breathe passes into the blood vessels surrounding the alveoli, while carbon dioxide from the blood passes out of the blood vessels and is expelled when we exhale.
