The treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, signed in 1848, ended the Mexican-American War and resulted in Mexico ceding over half of its territory, including present-day California, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming, to the United States. The treaty also established the Rio Grande as the border between Texas and Mexico.
