At home, Spain established the Spanish Inquisition to root out heresy and enforce religious conformity. They also promoted the Counter-Reformation, supporting the Catholic Church's efforts to combat Protestantism. Abroad, Spain sent missionaries to the Americas and Asia to convert indigenous populations to Catholicism. They also used military force to defend Catholic territories and combat the spread of Protestantism.
