This inherited disorder is tested for in the hospital prior to the baby being released home with it's parents in order to prevent a build up of amino acids in the body which can cause neurological problems, and in severe cases, death.

The disorder being described is called Phenylketonuria (PKU). It is tested for through the newborn screening process, which is usually done within the first 24-48 hours after birth. If left untreated, PKU can lead to intellectual disability, seizures, behavioral problems, and other serious health issues. Early detection and treatment through a special diet can help manage the condition and prevent complications.
