Note: Your teacher will grade your response for question 20 to ensure that you receive proper credit for your answer. Identify one of the darker actions examined in a story or drama from this unit. In what piece is the action highlighted? What intentions or emotions prompt the action? How would the story or drama change if the character involved were able to overcome the darker impulse and indulge a higher intention? Explain.

One of the darker actions examined in this unit is the murder of Duncan in William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth". In this piece, Macbeth is driven by a combination of ambition and greed to kill King Duncan in order to fulfill the witches' prophecy of becoming king himself. His intentions are guided by his desire for power and status, as well as by Lady Macbeth's manipulation and persuasion.

If Macbeth were able to overcome his darker impulse and indulge a higher intention, the story would drastically change. He would not have blood on his hands and would not have to face the consequences of his actions, such as his descent into madness and eventual downfall. Macbeth's character would likely be redeemed, and he may have a chance at a more peaceful and fulfilling life, rather than one filled with guilt and paranoia. The play would have a much different message and theme, focusing perhaps on the power of redemption or the triumph of good over evil.
