The catalytic churches responded to the development of Protestantism by holding several church councils, such as the Council of Trent, to address the theological differences and to reaffirm their own beliefs and practices. They also implemented reforms within the Catholic Church through the Counter-Reformation in an attempt to win back those who had converted to Protestantism. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of strong leadership and unity within the Church to counter the challenges posed by the Protestant movement.
