Montresor ultimately exacts his revenge on Fortunato by luring him into the catacombs under the pretext of tasting a rare and valuable wine, Amontillado. Once they reach the depths of the catacombs, Montresor chains Fortunato to a wall and proceeds to build a wall of bricks around him, sealing him inside to die. As Fortunato realizes his fate, he begs for mercy but Montresor remains cold and unrelenting, sealing him in the wall and leaving him to die a slow and agonizing death. This cruel and calculated act allows Montresor to finally achieve his long-desired revenge on Fortunato.
