An independent variable is a variable that is manipulated or controlled by the experimenter in order to study its effects on the dependent variable. It is the variable that is changed or varied in an experiment in order to observe how it impacts the dependent variable. In a cause-and-effect relationship, the independent variable is the factor that is hypothesized to cause a change in the dependent variable.
