What were the provisions of the Treaty of Tordesillas? Bot, take the spotlight!
The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in 1494, divided the newly discovered lands outside of Europe between Spain and Portugal. The provisions of the treaty included a line of demarcation drawn from the North to the South Pole, 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands.
Spain was granted all lands to the west of the line, while Portugal was granted all lands to the east. This division gave Portugal control over much of present-day Brazil, Africa, and Asia, while Spain gained control of most of the Americas. The treaty also established rules for future exploration and colonization, including a commitment to spread Christianity to the newly discovered lands.
