The World Health Organization (WHO) defines miscarriage as the spontaneous loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy. It is also known as spontaneous abortion.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) defines abortion as the termination of a pregnancy before the fetus is viable outside the uterus. This can be done through medical or surgical methods.
