In the beginning of the book "Blood On The River” Samuel, who is the main character, is very angry and doesn't know how to channel his anger.

I think that in this book the person who had the most of an impact on Samuel is captain smith because he has taught Samuel many things that have further helped him become a better person. Captain Smith taught Samuel to be dependent “stand on one foot” (pg 55). Captain Smith said this because Samuel and Richard got into a fight and Captain Smith dragged Samuel away and made him stand on one foot while the ship was rowing harshly, Samuel was unable to stand on one foot unless he had someone to help him. The point of this lesson was because Samuel was very independent even when he needed help. This was the lesson that captain smith chose because Samuel wouldn't be able to survive on his own if he wasn't going to work with others.

Another thing that Captain Smith has taught Samuel was how to control his anger “Don't let your anger get the best of you, Samuel” he says “learn to channel it and it will become your strength rather than your weakness” (pg 58). After Captain Smith said this Samuel then starts to think about how he has seen captain smith use this advice “I have seen that he has been channeling his anger at Master Wingfield and Captain Ratcliffe into his writing” (pg 58). Samuel even uses this advice in further chapters and fights. This shows that Captain Smith really did make an impact on the futcher of Samuel.

Samuel was also taught by Captain Smith how to use a sword and how to be a translator to the gentleman. Captain Smith taught Samuel how to speak the algonquin language and use a sword so that Samuel could protect himself and so he could translate to the gentleman. Captain Smith seems harsh but in reality it is all for the best and he is actually really caring and wants the best for his people especially Samuel.

In conclusion Captain smith is the biggest impact on samuel in my opinion and is samuel's mentor. In the beginning of the book Samuel has no friends, is resentful, is a loner, gets into many fights, a slave, and has a philosophy “trust no one”. At the end of the book Samuel has friends, is no longer a slave, does not get into fights, is strong, and is a good person thanks to Captain Smith.

In the beginning of the book "Blood On The River,” Samuel, who is the main character, is very angry and doesn't know how to channel his anger.

In my opinion, in this book the person who had the most impact on Samuel is Captain Smith because he taught Samuel many things that helped him become a better person. Captain Smith taught Samuel to be dependent, saying "stand on one foot" (pg 55). This lesson came after Samuel and Richard fought and Captain Smith dragged Samuel away, making him stand on one foot while the ship was rowing roughly. Samuel struggled to stand on one foot alone, showing him he needed help. The lesson was to teach Samuel to rely on others when needed, as he was too independent.

Another lesson Captain Smith taught Samuel was how to control his anger. He advised Samuel, "Don't let your anger get the best of you, Samuel. Learn to channel it and it will become your strength rather than your weakness" (pg 58). Samuel observed Captain Smith channeling his anger at others into his work, showing Samuel how to do the same. This advice helped Samuel in future fights and challenges, proving Captain Smith's impact on him.

Captain Smith also taught Samuel how to use a sword and translate for the gentlemen. By teaching Samuel the Algonquin language and sword skills, Captain Smith ensured Samuel could protect himself and communicate effectively. Though Captain Smith may appear harsh, his actions were ultimately for Samuel's benefit and showed his care for his people.

In conclusion, Captain Smith is the biggest influence on Samuel in my opinion and serves as his mentor. At the beginning of the book, Samuel has no friends, is resentful, a loner, gets into fights, is a slave, and follows the philosophy of "trust no one." By the end of the book, Samuel has friends, is no longer a slave, avoids fights, is strong, and has become a good person thanks to Captain Smith.
