Repolarization is the process by which the cell membrane potential returns to its resting state after depolarization during an action potential. During repolarization, potassium ions move out of the cell, allowing the membrane potential to become more negative again. This restores the electrical gradient across the cell membrane and prepares the cell for the next action potential.
