The historic divide between Shi'a and Sunni Islam began in the mid-seventh century following the death of Prophet Muhammad in 632 AD. The division was solidified in the year 680 AD with the Battle of Karbala, where the supporters of Ali (Shi'a) and the Umayyad Caliphate (Sunni) fought against each other.
