The Importance of Being Earnest

Act II, Second Half

What is Cecily’s response when Algernon proposes? How is this ironic?

Cecily's response to Algernon's proposal is that she accepts, despite the fact that she has only just met him and knows very little about him. This is ironic because earlier in the play, Cecily had claimed to have never met Algernon before when he arrived as "Bunbury." Additionally, Cecily had previously expressed her desire to marry someone named Ernest, and Algernon's real name is not actually Ernest. This shows the whimsical and satirical nature of the play, as characters make impulsive decisions based on superficial qualities rather than true understanding or affection.
