The penumbra during a lunar eclipse refers to the outer, lighter part of the shadow cast by Earth onto the moon. It is the part of the shadow where only a portion of the light source is obscured, resulting in a partial shadow. This is in contrast to the umbra, which is the darker, inner part of the shadow where the light source is completely blocked.
