The Importance of Being Earnest

Act I, Second Half

What is Lady Bracknell’s opinion of education? Why is this surprising?

Lady Bracknell's opinion of education is quite dismissive and condescending. She states, "Education produces no effect whatsoever." This is surprising because Lady Bracknell is a member of the upper class and has likely received a privileged education herself. Her disdain for education may stem from her belief that social status and wealth are more important than intellectual pursuits. It also reflects the superficial and materialistic values of her social circle.
