The Treaty of Tordesillas was an agreement between Portugal and Spain in 1494. It said that they would split up the newly discovered lands outside of Europe. Portugal got to explore and claim lands to the east of a certain line, and Spain got to do the same to lands to the west of the line. This helped avoid fights over who got to explore where.
