The U.S. decided to use atomic bombs on populated cities, such as Hiroshima and Nagasaki, during World War II in order to quickly bring about the surrender of Japan and end the war. It was believed that using the atomic bombs would save American lives by avoiding a prolonged and potentially costly invasion of Japan.
