The Olmec civilization began in the region of present-day Mexico, primarily in the states of Veracruz and Tabasco. The Olmec people are considered to be one of the oldest Mesoamerican civilizations, dating back to around 1400 BCE. Their influence and culture spread throughout the region and had a significant impact on subsequent Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya and Aztec.
