irst Trip to the Sun

Borg zipped up his sunsuit and stepped into the space shuttle. He put on a thick pair of sunglasses. Then he put a helmet on his head, sunscreen on his nose, and lip balm on his mouth.

“Can you believe we’re taking the first trip to the Sun? Just you and me, Borg,” Letitia said proudly.

“Frankly, I feel quite nervous,” Borg said.

“We’re prepared, and we’re not going to get burned,” Letitia said. “We’re going to go down in history as the bravest scientists to go into space.”

Borg sank into his seat at the control center and ran a final check of the shuttle. The scientists who would be watching from the ground gave them the “OK” signal. Feeling uneasy, Borg started the space shuttle.

Neither Borg nor Letitia could count how many days passed. But as they rocketed ever closer to the Sun, their thick sunglasses were no longer enough.

“I fear we’re going to become blind!” Borg said as his eyes saw blurry bits of light.

“We’ll be fine,” Letitia scoffed. “Growing up in New Hampshire, I felt like there was never enough Sun. And now here we are, about to explore the Sun!” She clapped her hands with glee.

Only half listening, Borg nodded, trying to fight the blurry waves stealing away his vision. “Are your eyes OK?” he asked her.

“They’re a little hazy,” Letitia said casually.

Borg glanced over at Letitia. He was alarmed to see that her face was as red as a ripe tomato. Sweat was pouring down her cheeks and chin, and her hands slightly shook. Borg lifted up her helmet and pressed his palm against her forehead.

“You’re burning up!” Borg cried.

“I’m fine,” Letitia insisted, but her voice was weak.

Grabbing a lever, Borg turned the shuttle back toward Earth. Letitia was furious, but her mouth was too dry for her to speak. She needed water. She needed a cold blast of air like the ones she hated back in New Hampshire.

“I guess this mission was too much of a good thing,” Borg whispered. “The Sun is incredible, but too much of it is dangerous. The same is true of anything in life.”

Borg and Letitia eventually made it back to Earth with a new respect for the Sun. They knew that in the future, they would do everything in moderation.

Borg and Letitia's first trip to the Sun may not have gone as planned, but it taught them an important lesson about the dangers of too much of a good thing. They may not have discovered the mysteries of the Sun on that trip, but they gained a deeper respect for it and a newfound appreciation for moderation in all things. And who knows, maybe their next trip to the Sun will be a successful one, thanks to the valuable lessons they learned on their first journey.

Based on the text, why is Letitia so excited to see the Sun?

She is always cold.

She grew up with very little Sun and wants to explore it now.

She has already been to the moon, but the Sun is a new place.

She grew up in a sunny climate and wants to remember it.
