Before the Spanish conquest, the Inca Empire had a thriving economy based on agriculture, extensive road networks, impressive architectural achievements such as Machu Picchu, a complex system of government and administration, and a strong military. The Inca Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in the Americas at the time, stretching from modern-day Ecuador to Chile. The Inca people worshipped various deities and had a strict social hierarchy with the ruler, known as the Sapa Inca, at the top. Trading and tribute were also important aspects of the Inca economy.
