(16 points)

Nationalism played a significant role in the outbreak of World War I as it fueled competition and tensions between states based on their desire for self-determination and dominance over others. Imperialism also contributed to the conflict as European powers competed for overseas territories, leading to rivalries and clashes over resources and markets. Militarism further escalated tensions between states as countries built up their armed forces, leading to an arms race and a readiness for war. Alliances exacerbated the situation by creating a complex network of agreements that dragged multiple countries into conflicts, turning minor disputes into large-scale wars. This interplay of nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and alliances ultimately led to the outbreak of World War I as countries could no longer avoid conflict due to these underlying causes.
