In 1964, Craig Breedlove became the first man to drive faster than five hundred miles per hour, but he almost died doing it. Near the end of his run, his car's parachute broke off. Out of control, the car went off the track, between some telephone poles, and into a salt pond. Breedlove escaped through a hatch in the roof. He had set a new record: 526.28 miles per hour! Unfortunately, this record was broken by another race car driver only twelve days later.
