A Pizzeria Chef

Bethany Miller

1Imagine one day becoming a chef at a pizzeria. A pizzeria is a restaurant that specializes in making pizza, one of Italy's most popular dishes. If you think that as a pizza chef you'll cook only Italian foods, however, think again. A pizza chef can travel the world without ever leaving the kitchen.

2The first stop on your world tour as a pizza chef is France. After all, the word chef comes from the phrase chef de cuisine, which in France means "head of the kitchen." As a pizza chef, you'll be in charge of a kitchen that makes pizza. Pizza is an Italian word, but it likely came from an Old High German word that means "to bite." This origin certainly fits; everyone likes "to bite" into a slice of pizza! The citizens of Naples, Italy, were the first to make pizza as we know it today. If you visited the town, the locals would tell you that a real Neapolitan pizza should be made with locally grown ingredients. A Neapolitan pizza includes a crust, tomatoes, and mozzarella cheese. It serves as the model for almost all other pizzas.

3As a pizza chef, you'll likely spend a good portion of your day slicing and dicing toppings for your pies. People enjoy all kinds of toppings on their pizzas. Some vegetables that often top pizzas are peppers, olives, and mushrooms. Pizzas topped with meats such as pepperoni, sausage, or bacon are also popular. Some people like Hawaiian pizza, which is pizza covered with ham and pineapple. Despite its name, this pizza has nothing to do with these Pacific islands. In fact, the pineapple fruit is native to Brazil. And the idea of using ham and pineapple on pizza? That is believed to have developed in Germany.

4Pizza chefs must be skilled in cooking other foods, too. Many pizza restaurants serve other Italian foods such as spaghetti or lasagna. As a pizza chef, you'll have to develop your own special recipes for all of the foods you cook.

5Some pizzerias serve food for people who don't like Italian cooking. For example, a pizza chef might have to whip up a hamburger, another food with a German connection. Hamburger means "of Hamburg," which is a city in Germany. Other popular items at pizzerias are French fries, chicken wings, and sandwiches.

6A pizza chef is always busy at work. He or she needs to make sure that all of the foods are made correctly and taste great. Since many restaurants are open late, you could have a very long day at work if you decide to become a pizza chef. You will probably have to work on weekends, too.
