Israel Timeline

1948 - Israel officially declares independence after the end of British rule. The Arab-Israeli War begins shortly after.

1967 - The Six-Day War takes place, resulting in Israel gaining control of the Gaza Strip, Sinai Peninsula, West Bank, and Golan Heights.

1979 - Israel signs a peace treaty with Egypt, becoming the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel's existence.

1993 - The Oslo Accords are signed, setting the framework for future peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine.

2005 - Israel withdraws from the Gaza Strip, dismantling all Israeli settlements in the area.

2008-2009 - Israel launches a military operation in Gaza known as Operation Cast Lead in response to rocket attacks by Hamas.

2014 - Another conflict erupts between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 2,000 Palestinians and 67 Israelis.

2020 - Israel signs normalization agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, known as the Abraham Accords.

2021 - Israel holds its fourth election in two years, resulting in Benjamin Netanyahu being replaced as prime minister by Naftali Bennett. Israel also faces increased conflict with Hamas in Gaza, resulting in airstrikes and rocket attacks.
